Ashbourne came up short yesterday in Gorey to loose by a score of 10 to 6. A converted try deep in injury time secured the 4 points for the home side.
Ashbourne played into the ‘Desmond’ gale in the first half and held Gorey to a 3 point lead at the break. It was difficult for either side to play rugby but both worked hard. The line out was a lottery but Ashbourne were dominating the scrum.
After the break the game went to uncontested scrums which negated a major weapon that Ashbourne was using on the day, as Gorey had injuries and had fulfilled the front row quota of cover. It was a repeat of the seconds game which also went uncontested.
That said Ashbourne drew level early on in the half and went ahead well into the half. But the home side had belief and worked their way down the field to win the game.
A losing bonus point was taken but you left with the feeling that that there was more there for Ashbourne.
The 2nd XV did win by 7 points to nil with a try scored against the wind. Under difficult conditions they will take the win and move on
