Sad news on the loss of our colleague Declan Flynn
The Executive of@Ashbourne Rugby Club would like to extend its sympathies to the family of Declan Flynn on his passing on Thursday. Declan joins a number of stalwarts of the club that have passed this year and he will be missed.
One of our and his colleagues, Jack Conlan, puts some thoughts together as follows:
Unfortunately, the bad news today continues today; with the death of Declan Flynn.
Declan played for Ashbourne Rugby Club and served as a distinguished president of the club.
He also served as the Senior Representative for the North East area in the Leinster Branch IRFU. He was also a successful Manager for the Leinster Junior Rugby Team.
Declan came as a “refugee” from Delvin, like so many of our outstanding players, in the early years of the club. However, he soon found his feet and contributed significantly, to his knew home.
He was an accomplished out-half, with the ability to kick with both feet. Unfortunately, we got him towards the end of his playing career so his playing career with Ashbourne was quite short.
He had a great interest in different sports and was a member of Bettystown Golf Club, where he played golf to a high standard.
Declan and Geraldine were great supporters of Ashbourne Rugby Club club, down the years. Declan was friendly, sociable and gregarious. He had an endless supply of stories, with which he entertained and regaled everyone.
He had a wonderful detailed recall of events in rugby matches or in golf. He astonished us by recalling incidents in rugby matches or on shots played in golf, sometimes way in the past.
It brings to mind the poem “The Village Schoolmaster” by Oliver Goldsmith:
“And still they gazed and still the wonder grew, that one small head could carry all he knew”.
I was in a carpool with Declan, Geraldine and Brid Kelly, when he worked in Garristown and the rest of us worked in Drogheda. He later set up his own very successful auctioneering company in Duleek.
We will miss him.
